You Can Do It!

2016: AVON 39 The Walk to End Breast Cancer: San Francisco

Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much!

Team NBN (No Boobs Neglected)

We all know that there's strength in numbers, so it’s with great strength that we’ll work and walk toward putting an end to the suffering caused by breast cancer.  Members of our team, Team NBN, began participating in the Avon 39 San Francisco in 2012 after losing a loved one to the disease. However, in the following years as more people joined our group the team was formally created in 2014.

NBN Sports, Inc, a promotional products company in San Jose, employs and has close ties to several members of our group and began supporting us with t-shirts and other fundraising efforts.  This lead to our team name, Team NBN (No Boobs Neglected) a play on the company’s name…  The team now includes individuals from all around the Bay Area including, San Jose, Campbell, Cupertino, Fremont, Hayward, Newark, Foster City, Vacaville, Petaluma, Sacramento and as far south as Arroyo Grande.  We continue to grow every year as individuals join our fight against one of the leading causes of death in women.

All women and men are at risk for breast cancer. This year, the American Cancer Society (ACS) reports that over 211,000 women in the U.S.will be diagnosed with breast cancer and over 40,000 deaths will be attributed to the disease. Breast cancer also occurs in men, and this year over 460 men in the U.S.will die from breast cancer. Because there is no known cure for the disease, awareness, education and early detection are our best defenses against it. According to the ACS, there is a 98% survival rate when breast cancer is caught early, before it spreads to other parts of the body.

For this reason, every year our team members join the event in San Francisco and with thousands of others we walk for two days and nearly 40 miles through the beautiful streets of San Francisco. From bustling downtown to the raw beauty of MarinCounty, the magical "walk" takes us across the Golden Gate Bridge and along the Sausalito waterfront.  We see Fisherman’s Wharf and Lombard Street and get an up-close view of the city’s cable cars and gorgeous Victorian homes. The legendary roller coaster hills challenge and invigorate us as we strive to make a difference in the lives of so many men and women who have been affected by this horrible disease!!!

Each team member is required to raise a minimum $1800 to participate in the event and the money raised is managed and disbursed by the Avon Foundation.  Funds are awarded for breast cancer awareness and education; screening and diagnosis; treatment; support services; and scientific research. Beneficiaries range from leading cancer centers to community-based non-profit breast health programs in the vicinities of each Avon Walk event and nationwide. The focus is on reaching the medically underserved population, including minorities, the poor, elderly, under- and uninsured, with a mission to fund access to care and finding a cure for breast cancer. To date, Team NBN has raised over $54,000 for this cause.  TheAvon39 series is a 501 (c) (3) public charity and their federal tax ID number is 13-6128447.   All donations to Team NBN are recorded under this tax ID number and may be used as a tax write off.

Our next walk is set for July 23rd and 24th in 2016… Our goal: To have 25 team members raise a minimum of $50k by walk day! It’s a lofty ambition, but because we're in this together, we know that, with your help, we can do it.   Even if you can't make a monetary donation we encourage you to make plans to travel to the City on these days and watch the sea of pink, and cheer us on. It is an amazing and inspiring sight to see. We look forward to seeing you at the event, as we turn a corner, conquer a hill or as we cross that finish line! Together we can make a difference, we can find a cure.
